VIETNAM –second part 1963 Diem assassinated by own troops Kennedy assassinated  replaced by Lyndon Johnson Johnson escalates the war 1. Gulf of Tonkin Resolution: Congress gives Johnson approval to take any  military measures he wants in Vietnam-1964 Said that US ships were in Gulf of Tonkin  unjustifiably under torpedo attack by  North Vietnamese Doesn’t tell Congress that US ships were spying on North Vietnamese To this day, still unclear as to whether or not there was an attack at all Sends hundreds of thousands of US troops and bombers 2. Johnson’s war plan: heavy bombing of North, American troops to help South  Vietnamese army in South only 15,000 troops in South before Kennedy’s death 380,000 troops a few years later 3. He feels North Vietnam will the surrender quickly problem develops when North Vietnam didn’t surrender had to keep sending more
