WORLD WAR I Europe war breaks out 1914 Americans stayed out, isolated  Hesitant because they have never had dealt with anything outside of the borders Had many German immigrants and didn’t want to fight against them Undermines the optismism that the nation stood for WWI showed the Americans how bloody nations could be 8.5 million soldiers died America came into the war in 1917 Fundamental concept: WWI tarnished the idea of NATIONALISM If loyal to the nation you would get justice and equal rights People began to wonder if nations could even provide for their own nations Nations could organize in the purpose for violence and killing in incredible way Launches a century of unnecessary killing and violence Challenges American traditions Free speech  Individual free of govt control and power Calls for Americans to have new controls of their lives thought the draft and  military service End of war prepared the ground for an outbreak of a more brutal war in 20  years
