Riordan Manufacturing Overview Riordan Manufacturing is a global plastics manufacturing company that employs 550 people. Headquartered in San Jose, California, Riordan Manufacturing is a company founded by Dr. Riordan in 1991. Originally focused on research and development of patents held by Dr. Riordan, the company’s focus changed in 1992 when Dr Riordan purchased a fan manufacturing plant in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1993, the company expanded into the production of plastic beverage containers when it acquired a manufacturing plant in Albany, Georgia. In 2000, Riordan Manufacturing expanded again when it opened a manufacturing plant in China. At that point, the fan manufacturing moved from Pontiac, Michigan to the new China location. The Michigan location retooled their facility for the manufacturing of custom plastic parts. Finance and Accounting Current Configuration and Challenges Riordan Manufacturing has three distinct and distally located operating entities that are located in Georgia, Michigan and California. Each of these entities has their own finance and accounting application at their locations. The breakdown of entities systems are as follows. The San Jose, California headquarters location owns a fully licensed Windows based enterprise resource planning system designed specifically for the plastic processors and process and assembly manufactures. The San Joes location does not own the source code for this application so custom coding of the application is not possible. The Michigan location has purchased a custom software package to address their financial and accounting needs. While the Michigan location does have access to the source code, because it is programmed in C, the vendor is no longer in business. To increase to the challenges at the Michigan location the application runs on a pair of DEC Alphas running the VMS operating system. Client workstations for the application

are VAX4000’s. At the Georgia location, the financial, accounting and manufacturing package is also a custom coded application. The application runs on two AS400’s using the UNIX operating system. In the area of daily operations these non-compatible systems causes issues for the members of the corporate finance and accounting department. Data updates to corporate headquarters from the operating entities are received in several different formats. Some data is sent over as data files and can be imported into the corporate financial and accounting system; some data is delivered via hard copy and must be re-entered into the corporate system; some data is delivered via data file but cannot be imported into the corporate accounting system due to code incompatibility and mismatching. These challenges cause billing and departmental functionality delays that are unacceptable to the client. Some of the issues produced by these issues are that Income Statements and Balance Sheet production are labor intensive and normally not completed until 15-20 days after month end. Internal and external financial audits are costly and labor
