Article Summary There are not so many success stories pertaining to the investment in technology for hospital supply chain management. Kowalski noted that clinical and financial application has always been considered more important than hospital supply chain management and consequently were given more attention and investment. At the same time, investment in technology for hospital supply chain management should not be ignored. Moreover, there are several specific strategies to consider in this regard. Prior to investing in technology for supply chain management in hospital setting, it is critical to complete an operational assessment and develop the overall supply chain strategy. The plan should also talk about the role of technology. The technology and supply chain strategies should compliment each other and include multiple technology application, including information technology and automation. Research on how other industries use technology may help in developing technology strategy for hospital supply chain

Automation technology may help hospitals address the issue of cost and availability of people resources. While significant capital may be required for technology automation, it is very helpful in supporting the overall supply chain strategic plan. Kowalski recommends being creative in identifying the needed applications during the process of selection and deployment of technology. At the same time, it is necessary to conduct an objective and thorough evaluation of the available application in order to fit the strategy and generate the desired results for a hospital supply chain management.
