1. allegory – story in which all elements (characters, plot, images, setting) are representative of some other story 2. allusion – reference to a person, event, object or work from history, mythology, or literature 3. aside – in a play, when one character speaks to another character as though no one else can hear 4. ballad – poem or song telling a popular story (O); either very sad or very exciting; served as a form of entertainment in mead-halls 5. carpe diem – Renaissance Cavalier theme of “seize the day,” a Latin phrase 6. caesura – deep pause in the middle of a line of poetry 7. chivalry – code of honor that knights (and all men) were supposed to follow in medieval times; made up of loyalty, bravery, honesty, courtesy, and gentleness 8. comedy – 9. contemptu mundi – medieval theme that reminds people to “hate the world” 10. courtly love – set of rules governing behavior of nobles, esp. b/w men and women 11.
