Ivy Allshouse HUM 176 Selection: Lady Gaga (Musical Artist) Thesis: Pop Rock Superstar, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, known better for her stage name, Lady Gaga is both influential and controversial. Her music appeals to the younger generation and her style, while controversial with most adults, lets teen girls know it is okay to be yourself. In 2006, while trying to think of a stage name, a friend sent her a message that meant to say ‘Radio Gaga,’ after the song by Queen, which Stefani adored. Instead the Auto Correct changed Radio to Lady and Lady Gaga was born. While Lady Gaga struggled to get her career started, she eventually topped the charts in six countries with her song “Just Dance” and again with “Poker Face.” Lady Gaga’s music was relatable by most people in their teens and twenties making her hugely successful. Lady Gaga is also known for her flamboyant behavior, especially at a performance in England, after a taxi driver murdered 12 people, where in the opening of Gaga’s performance she was attacked by a performer dressed in black and then laid dying on a puddle of blood. Lady Gaga has shown people that it is okay to be yourself no matter how different you may be. Lady Gaga’s role as a self-esteem booster for her fans has been praised.
