Richard Duong Chem 262L Joseph Sokol 18 February 2010 Experiment 1-Separation of Components from a Mixture O R OH + R O O OH + H 2 O O R O + R O OH + HSO 4 H 2 SO 4 Purpose : to perform a solvent-solvent extraction to separate an organic compound from a mixture in order to remove any impurities that the organic compound may have, leaving its pure form. Procedure : 1.001g of an unknown compound, labeled ‘2,’ was massed and placed into a 125mL Erlenmeyer flask. 15mL of diethyl ether and 15mL of 5% NaOH were also added to the same flask. All the contents of the Erlenmeyer flask were poured into a separatory funnel. The Erlenmeyer flask was rinsed with 10mL of ether and also added to the separatory funnel. The separatory funnel was first vented by inverting the funnel and opening the stopcock. Then, the contents in the separatory funnel were swirled together for two minutes, occasionally vented. The separatory funnel was then left to sit so that two layers formed.
