Richard Duong Chem 262L Joseph Sokol 18 March 2010 Experiment IV: Dehydration of 2-Methylcyclohexanol Purpose : To carry out an elimination reaction of 2-methylcyclohexanol so the product can be purified and analyzed using methods of gas chromatography. OH + H 3 PO 4 Procedure : 3 mL of 2-methylcyclohexanol, 1 mL of 85% phosphoric acid, and a boiling chip were added to a 5 mL round bottom flask with a magnetic stir bar. The solution developed a yellowish tint. The mixture was allowed to heat at reflux for 30 minutes in a distillation setup. After 30 minutes, the condenser was covered with aluminum foil so that the mixture could be distilled into a reaction tube. The maximum temperature that was reached during this process was 80 C and 1.5 mL of product was collected. A small amount of magnesium sulfate was added to the reaction tube to dry out any remaining water and the product was analyzed by gas chromatography.

A chromatograph was obtained using DataStudio. Once the standard settings and tests were complete, data collection began. A sample of 1-methylcyclohexene was obtained and 2.5μL was injected into the GC using standardized procedures. It took around 780 seconds for the full chromatograph to appear. This procedure was repeated for two samples of organic liquid
