Richard Duong Chem 262L Joseph Sokol 7 April 2010 Experiment VII: Preparation of Amides from Carboxylic Acids Purpose : To convert the purified carboxylic acid obtained from experiment one to its amide derivative. C O C C O O R Cl NH 2 R OH R SOCl 2 NH 4 OH Procedure : 0.301 g of purified acid from experiment one (unknown #2) was added to a 5-mL round bottomed flask along with 1 mL of thionyl chloride. The solution was heated at reflux for 45 minutes, while the top of the condenser tube was covered with an inverted glass stemmed funnel connected to an aspirator to remove any fumes. After 45 minutes, the solution gave off a dark yellow/brownish tint. The solution was allowed to cool to room temperature and then pipetted drop wise into a 50-mL beaker containing 10 mL of ammonium hydroxide solution. A lot of product was lost at this stage due to human error-the pipette solution seemed to shoot out of the pipette really fast everywhere, therefore it was placed in the sink as new gloves were obtained and a lot of the solution was lost. During this phase, every time some solution was pipetted into the ammonium hydroxide solution, there was a lot of white smoke emmited along with a strong odor. A white precipitate formed in a clear solution.

The reaction was then allowed to cool to room temperature and 10 mL of water and 13 mL of dichloromethane was added to the 50 mL beaker. The solution was stirred with a glass rod and the solution looked clear-all the white flakes were dissolved. The mixture was transferred to a separatory funnel and the dichloromethane layer (bottom) was separated from the aqueous layer (top). The aqueous layer was set aside and the dichloromethane layer was rinsed
