Suneet Bhansali Chem 262L Section 412 Nucleophilic Substitution: The Synthesis of 2’-Methylphenoxyacetic Acid The purpose of this experiment was to use an S N 2 reaction and crystallization to produce 2’- Methylphenoxyacetic Acid. To a 5-mL round bottomed flask, 1-mL of water and a stir bar were added. The flask was put over a hot plate and only the stirrer was turned on. One 0.134g pellet of hygroscopic NaOH was quickly weighed and added to the flask. Once the NaOH had dissolved, 0.965 mL of o-cresol was added. Into a separate reaction tube, 0.40g of sodium chloroacetate was measured and dissolved using water. The amounts of o-cresol and sodium chloroacetate were determined using stoichiometry and were specific to the weight of the sodium hydroxide pellet. Once the sodium chloroacetate had dissolved, the solution was added to the flask using a pipette. The mixture was then stirred for one minute and 15 seconds.
