SUNEET BHANSALI Section 412 Lab 4 Dehydration of 2-Methylcyclohexanol The purpose of this lab is to use gas chromatography to determine which product, 1- methylcyclohexene and/or 3-methylcyclohexene was formed by an elimination reaction of 2- methylcyclohexanol. To a 5-mL round bottomed flask, a stir bar, 3-mL of 2-methylcyclohexanol, a boiling chip, and 1-mL of 85% H 3 PO 4 were added. The reaction was heated to reflux for about 25 minutes. Aluminum foil was wrapped around the condenser and the product was distilled. Two-mL of liquid was collected and the top organic layer was transferred into a vial. MgSO 4 was used to dry the organic layer. To determine which of the three products may have formed, gas chromatography was used.
