Suneet Bhansali Section 412 3/3/09 Lab 5 – A Wittig Reaction: Preparation of a para-methoxycinnamic Acid Purpose and Procedure: The purpose of this lab was to create a solid carboxylic ester by hydrolysis of an α,β- unsaturated ester, which was prepared by treating a phosphonate ylide solution with p- anisaldehyde. A 5-mL round-bottomed flask with a stir bar and two test tubes were dried in the drying oven for 10 minutes and then cooled to room temperature. To the 5-mL flask, 2-mL of 1.2N NaOCH 3 was transferred from the buret under nitrogen and the solution was stirred. A stopper was quickly put on the flask to minimize exposure of the solution to air. Stoichiometric calculations were used to convert 2.4mmol triethylphosphonoacetate into 0.476-mL triethylphosphonoacetate, which was transferred drop-wise from a test tube to the flask containing sodium methoxide. The resulting mixture was stirred for 5 minutes and cooled in an ice bath. Again using stoichiometric calculations, it was determined that 0.292-mL of p-
