Suneet Bhansali Section 412 Lab 7: Preparation of Amides from Carboxylic Acid In this experiment, the purified carboxylic acid from Experiment 1 was converted into an acid halide using thionyl chloride, which was subsequently made into an amide through nucleophilic acyl substitution. To a 5-mL round bottomed flask, 0.312g of purified acid (unknown # 787) from experiment 1 and 1-mL of thionyl chloride were added. The reaction was set to reflux by heating the mixture very gently for about 40 min using a Thermowell Heater. To remove the acid fumes, the top of the condensing tube was covered with an inverted glass stemmed funnel, which was connected to an aspirator. After the specified reaction time, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and added drop-wise using a pipet into a 50-mL beaker containing 10-mL of concentrated ammonium hydroxide solution. This reaction was very exothermic. Once the mixture cooled to room temperature, 10-mL of water and 12-mL of
