Suneet Bhansali Section 412 March 31, 2009 Lab 8: Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution: Nitration of 4-Methylacetanilide Purpose and Procedure The purpose of this lab is to form two mono-nitration products by the nitration of 4- methylacetanilide. An apparatus to remove any acid vapors generated during the course of the reaction was prepared by placing and inverted, stemmed glass funnel, which was connected to an aspirator, over the mouth of the Erlenmeyer flask. To a dry, 10-mL Erlenmeyer flask 2-mL of 70% nitric acid, a stir bar, and 409 mg of 4-methylacetanilide were added. The mixture was stirred well at room temperature for 20 minutes while being warmed on low heat. After 20 minutes, the mixture turned a shade of dark orange or brown and was poured into 10-mL of ice cold water. The yellow product was quickly filtrated by suction filtration. The solution was washed with 2-mL of water 5 times and air was pulled through it for an extra 5 minutes to allow it to dry completely.
