Chem 262L Francisco Andrade Synthesis of 2’-Methylphenoxyacetic Acid Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to use an S N 2 reaction to produce a product that can be purified by crystallization. Balanced Chemical Equations: NaOH, EtOH H 2 O CH 3 O - Na + CH 3 OH CH 3 O - Na + ClCH 2 COO - Na + CH 3 OCH 2 COO - Na + CH 3 OCH 2 COO - Na + H 3 O + CH 3 OCH 2 COOH Procedure: To a 5-mL round bottom flask, 1 mL of water was added and stirred with a stir bar. One pellet of sodium hydroxide was quickly weighed and transferred to the flask. The amount of o- cresol and sodium chloroacetate was calculated based on the weight of the sodium hydroxide in order to achieve a 1:1 mole ratio. The o-cresol was dispensed into a reaction tube and the sodium chloroacetate was placed in a separate reaction tube? The o-cresol was transferred to the round bottom flask once the sodium hydroxide pellet was completely dissolved. To the sodium chloroacetate, 1 mL of water was added to dissolve the salt and then transfer the resulting solution to the reaction flask via disposable pipet. When the addition is complete, the long condenser tube was attached to the neck of the flask and the flask was placed into an aluminum block on a hot plate. The reaction solution was stirred at reflux for five minutes and the condenser tube was removed afterwards. The hot reaction mixture was transferred into a 10 mL Erlenmeyer flask and boiled to about 1/3 of its original volume. If a solid formed, water was added to maintain the
