Chem 262L Francisco Andrade Wittig Reaction: Preparation of a para -methoxycinnamic Acid Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to use the Horner-Emmons-Wadsworth modification of the Wittig reaction to create a carboxylic acid. Balanced Chemical Equation: H 3 CO H O H 3 CO COOH 1.A 2. OH, heat 3. H Procedure: A 5-mL round-bottom flask and two reaction tubes were dried in an oven for 10 minutes and allowed to cool to room temperature in a dessicator. To the round-bottom flask, 2 mL of 1.2 N NaOCH 3 was quickly added, and the flask was capped. The reaction solution was stirred with a stir bar. The flask was stoppered with a septum to minimize exposure to moisture in the air. To the first test tube, 2.4 mmol of triethylphosphonoacetate, or 0.48 mL, was added, and slowly added dropwise to the NaOCH 3 solution. The mixture was stirred for 5 minutes at room temperature and cooled in an ice bath. To the second test tube, 2.4 mmol p-anisaldehyde, or 0.29 mL, was added, and slowly added dropwise to the solution. The solution was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 15 minutes.
