Prepared by Tyler Caldwell David Martin Erin McGee Michael Schoenfeld and Sophia Woo BUSI 403 – Operations Management Fall 2008 2 December 2008 Introduction This report gives an in dept look at the operation management of the Adams Investment Group of Wachovia Securities. This report includes an introduction, background, and discussion of operation systems, capacity management, sales and operations planning, ABC classification, and major initiatives of the Adams Investment Group. While the small investment group is operating smoothly, some of our suggestions were incorporated in the agenda of future initiatives. Background Rick Adams and the Adams Investment Group are located on the 15 th floor of University Tower in Durham, NC. Rick has been building his investment group since 1991, when he became a certified financial advisor. Since then, he has become one of North Carolina’s top Financial Advisors and has been featured in several investment magazines.

Structure The Adams Investment Group is made up of a team of 8 people, with Rick at the top of this hierarchy. Rick’s position as the top Financial Advisor means that he is free to research and financially advise his clients as he wishes. Rick spends nearly all of his time meeting with clients to discuss financial objectives and actions, both in person and through conference calls. Under Rich is another certified financial planner, Eric Chetwood. Because Eric has all of the qualifications but less experience, it is possible for him to reduce much of Rick’s workload by handling the smaller accounts under management of the investment group. Under both Rick and Eric is a registered client associate, Michelle Disney. The registered client associate position is capable of all actions with the exception of offering clientele financial advice. Michelle is responsible for placing trades and does much of the administrative work. Additionally there are four interns who work part time. Interns handle as much of the administrative work as possible, as well working on special projects. Finally, Dana Rapalaya is the Operation Manager who works for the larger Wachovia Securities umbrella. Her position requires her to make sure that all of the paperwork submitted through the Adams Investment Group follows Wachovia Securities regulations. This is how Wachovia Securities ensures that all investment groups under the Wachovia name are following standards and operating correctly. The hierarchy set up is ideal to ensuring that all service requests are taken care of in a timely fashion.
