To: Professor Guler From: [name deleted] Date: September 15, 2005 Subject: Newspaper Publishing Industry Analysis Introduction The purpose of this memo is to analyze the Newspaper Publishing Industry with Michael Porter’s Five Forces Model. The Five Forces model should be applied at the industry level, not the firm level. The main purpose of the framework is to “determine the ultimate profit potential of an industry.” By assessing the strength of each of the five forces in the model an appropriate strategy can be formulated to combat competition. Industry Analysis The New York Times Co. (NYT) operates as a media company, including newspapers and related internet businesses, TV and radio stations, forest products, and other investments. The New York Times , nytimes.com , and the Boston Globe are some of NYT’s major holdings. NYT competes in the Newspaper Publishing Industry, which includes printers and publishers of newspapers. The two forces that have the greatest influence on the industry are the Extent of Rivalry
