Communications 312 Self and Communication o Every encounter has some reflections of self o How we communicate is based on our sense of self o Our self is formed by communication and interaction with others. The Components of Self is formed by three distinct areas (together they develop over time): o Self Awareness Ability to step outside yourself Reflect on yourself Social Comparison- We watch others then compare ourselves to them. Critical Self-reflection Good way to improve communication o Self-Concept Perception of who you are Based on beliefs, attitudes, and values (don’t necessarily have those values, but you think you have those values) Looking-glass self- A person’s self grows out of interaction with society. Self-fulfilling prophecies- Visualizing yourself in a certain way. If you visualize yourself as a good communicator, then you are more likely to actually be a good communicator.
