In this novel, the author tried to explain about how did characters view the war in which they were fighting? How did they view the leaders of their military? And how did they view the soldiers against whom they were fighting?I believe that most of the characters in this novel thought that this war was shocking and appalling; some even considered that die was a better choice than survive in this battle. The characters in this story did not really know what kind of war they had to do. Kantorek, their schoolmaster in their high school told his students that this war was kind of “nationalistic duty” and told them that they would return war heroes and the town would glorify them, thus they would be excited and ready for joining the war, and also Paul and the other his friends were still young, needed some new experiment, and had no definite plans for their future yet. So, they were so excited to find a new way of life in the battlefield. They were also encouraging one of their friends who did not want to join to the war until he joint. However, when Paul and his friends reached place of the war, the front, they realized that this war was much different from what they were led to believe. Paul even said that “the front was a mysterious whirlpool.
