Pentose phosphate pathway Learning objectives: Understand the role of glucose in producing  NADPH for reductive biosynthesis and ribose for  the synthesis of nucleic acids Know the two arms of the pentose phosphate  pathway, one reversible, the second irreversible Know the physiological needs served by the two  arms and understand that they can operate  independently of each other Recognize the organs/tissues containing the entire  pathway or only part of the pathway
