COUN5239 Theories of Psychotherapy U05d1 Behavioral, cognitive, or Reality Theory Counseling Scenario Lisa Lewis David is a 36 year old, immigrant, born in Mexico, who has recently left his wife. They have been married for 13 years. He has two girls, ages 6 and 10. Due to his separation, David only see’s his girls on weekends and is perplexed as what to do with them during their time together. He gives his wife money to help support their girls, but his wife is not satisfied with the amount. She threatens to restrict his visitation if he does not allocate more funding. David expresses feeling alone, confused, anxious, and depressed. Theoretical Script: Counselor: David, let’s start by you explaining to me why you have chosen counseling and what you would like to accomplish? I am interested in hearing what it is that brought you here and how it is affecting you. David: (Sigh) I have recently left my wife and I only get to spend weekends with my two daughters. During that time I feel at a loss. I want our time to be special but I really don’t know what to do with them. On top of that my wife is threatening to cut my visits if I don’t give her more money. I can’t afford more and I really don’t want to fight about this with her. I feel overwhelmed, depressed, anxious, and at an overall loss. Counselor: What kind of things are your girls interested in? What are some things you use to do with them? As for your wife have you explained to her your financial situation?
