Title Page Experiment #3 Paper Chromatography Date Performed: 2/1/11 Name: Kate McMillan Date Submitted: 2/7/11 Lab Partner: Kerri Fouchet CHM1045L Section #16 Lab TA: Yingjie Yu II. Purpose During this lab, the students will learn a fundamental technique called chromatography, which is used to separate components in a mixture. The techniques learned during this experiment will benefit the students in future chemistry work such as DNA samples and the like. During this experiment the students will be doing much more basic research and will conduct an experiment that separates the different dyes used in M&Ms candies. Procedure Students will use the procedure written in their lab notebooks. They will also copy the charts from the board into their lab notebooks under a “Data” section and fill in said charts with data. They will calculate the distance traveled for each dye with the formula given to them by their TA.
