Downs 1 Olivia Downs Dr. Wolfgang Lepschy ENG 1101 19 July 2010 Do Violent Video Games Affect Our Behavior? On October 19, 1958, William Higinbotham introduced “Tennis for Two”, the first video game ever made. In 1976, the first controversial violent game, “Death Race,” was released. Within the years, video games have become increasingly popular in our generation but the intensity of the games has also increased. To have control over who plays what game, ratings were placed on games restricting the more mature and violent games to the age of 17 and older. In 2008, 298.2 million video games were sold in the US and six out of the top ten selling games were violent, four having “Mature” ratings. However, our society is worried that these violent video games are displaying detrimental effects to our behavior, such as violence and aggression. As a result, it is important to ask whether violent video games cause aggressive or harmful behavior. About 160,000 students miss school every day because they fear they will be bullied. Many people feel that violent video games are an incentive to children becoming more aggressive and turning into bullies. After a study of the game Grand Theft Childhood , 60% of middle school boys who played at least one “Mature” rated game engaged in fighting (Procon 1). These games display beating up people to steal money, cars, weapons, and anything valuable they may have. Video games can portray these actions as “cool” and make them think that this is what happens in real life. It is assumed that playing games with these activities would make a person consider acting them out in real life.

Downs 2 Not only do violent video games cause bullying, they also produce violent thoughts. Some say that violent video games are dangerous because people find happiness in causing pain to others. Also they say it increases arousal and aggressive behavior because when producing aggressive thoughts, the blood flow increases and takes time to return to its normal baseline. An
