DECIDING HOW TO OBTAIN THE OBSERVATIONS Scientists take simple, even everyday observations, and seek to further their understanding. Most of our understanding about science has come from observations that have led to experiments. Observations can include something common, like a rock causing a ripple in a lake, or something less well known such as a mouse dying after being enclosed in a glass container. Consider some observations made by scientists and the discoveries that followed them. Observation Discovery Alexander Fleming noticed that a staph bacteria culture was infected with mold. The mold was killing the bacteria. The discovery of penicillin. Dogs who have their pancreas removed develop symptoms of diabetes. The discovery of insulin. There is a higher percentage of bald men than bald women. Sex-linked inheritance. Hemophilia was found more often in royal families than the general populous. The importance of avoiding inbreeding and recessive traits. Madam curie noted a higher level of radiation from pitchblende, a mixture of Polonium, than from Polonium itself. The discovery of Radon.
