Learning objectives Be able to define the following terms: transfer RNA, ribosomal RNA, peptidyl transferase, charged tRNA, RNA processing, codon, anti-codon Be able to describe the general function and structure of tRNA and rRNA (more to come in final unit) Be able to explain how rRNA and tRNA are encoded in the bacterial genome and why they are organized in that fashion Be able to explain how mature/functional tRNA is processed from larger transcripts Also, how unusual bases get incorporated and why they get incorporated

Transfer RNAs (tRNAs) Basic functions: Decipher the genetic code by linking together an RNA anti-codon (in tRNA) to the RNA codon in the mRNA Delivery of the appropriate amino acid to the proper place in the ribosome for subsequent addition to a peptide chain

Ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) Basic functions: Structural component of ribosomes (essential for proper structure) Participate in the chemical reaction of forming peptide bonds in a growing chain of amino acids
Background image of page 4
tRNA function: Turn genetic information stored in mRNA into protein —read triplet codons in mRNA and deliver appropriate amino acid into position rRNA function: Help to hold ribosomes together; assists in process of translation (peptidyl transferase activity) (Ribosomes are ~66% rRNA by mass and ~33% protein) Overview of protein synthesis and contribution of tRNA & rRNA
