Course Description, Goals, and Structure Description: Philosophy may be described as the activity of raising and addressing very fundamental questions about the world and human experience. For example, what is real? What is the purpose to life? What is the good? What is truth? Is there a God? It is natural for human persons to acquire a perspective of the world in which a certain stance is at least implicitly taken on such questions, even if we have not given them much thought. Philosophy, then, is not only an examination of ideas but also self -examination, reflection on one's own perspective. In this process we seek to get as clear as possible about fundamental presuppositions of perspective, draw out their logical implications, and evaluate them in terms of their rational acceptability. One of the consequences of this activity is a sharpening of one's perspective and reasoning abilities, as well as a development of self-understanding. Goals: to acquire a basic understanding of the nature of philosophical questions, their entrenchment in ordinary life, and to cultivate the habit of philosophizing as an actual, cognitive activity. Structure: the class will combine lectures, class discussion, some in-class writing, and film. We will watch at least two films: American Beauty (1999) and Contact (1997). II.
