English 310 Dornbusch Essay: Beauty and the Beast The Evolution of Gender Roles Background Zipes (1994) believes that fairy tales are a tool to teach and initiate children into  the dominant values and beliefs in a culture, and thus, also serve as a mirror to  reflect that culture’s values and beliefs.  Essay Topic What message(s) about gender or gender relations are being sent through the  various versions of Beauty and the Beast? What do these messages show about the  values and beliefs of our society and are they appropriate messages for children  and/or adults today? Your Task    Write a  4-5 page  essay explaining your position on the above topic. Think about the various versions  of  Beauty and the Beast , and choose one gender  related topic to write about.  You can write about a  gender itself (issues connected to masculinity or  femininity) or gender relations (for example, a  daughter’s relationship with her father or the relationship between a man and a woman).
