Another way to judge the readiness of wet plaster is that it can bear the pressure of the pounce pad, which is made from a bag of cheesecloth filled with charcoal dust. Sometimes I needed help to hold the paper pattern in place as I dusted the charcoal thorough the tiny holes in the paper formed by running a dressmaker's tracing wheel along the drawing lines.
