Midterm Study Guide HST 316 This study-guide is meant to help you prepare for the midterm examination (Feb 22, 2011). The exam will cover the reading, lecture, and discussion materials through and including Feb 15. The exam will consist of identifications, an essay, and a primary source analysis. Identifications (7% each = 35%) You must identify a person, place, or institution, or define a historical term. In a few sentences, locate him/her/it in time and place, and indicate its historical significance . This information may be drawn from lectures and readings. Example: Martin Luther 1483-1546, theologian and church reformer, leader in the German Reformation. A miner = s son from Saxony, Luther became an Augustinian friar and theology professor at Wittenberg. His criticism of indulgences (1517) provoked a major scandal in the Church. Luther broadened his attacks to include numerous church doctrines and practices (sacraments, priestly powers and privileges, monasteries, the cult of the saints, religious images, etc.) and formulated alternative teachings (justification by faith, the priesthood of all believers, the Bible as sole authority) in numerous writings. After various refusals to retract these opinions, he was excommunicated by the Church and was placed under the imperial ban (1521). Protected by the Electors of Saxony, Luther continued to teach, write and lead his movement until his death. There will be eight identifications on the exam, of which you must answer five . All will be chosen from the following list. Concerning Christian Liberty (=Freedom of a Christian)
