Medical Ethics Darin Harootunian 9/28/11 1 “The Challenge of Cultural Relativism,” James Rachels (Part 3 ) After dismissing the CDA, Rachels addresses the following argument in his paper: The Non-Deductive Argument for Cultural Relativism (More Carefully Formulated) 1) Cultural Relativism (our hypothesis H ) explains morality (the phenomenon to be explained) in particular, it explains the nature of morality, our moral experience, the content of moral codes, the fact that different cultures have different moral codes , etc, where these particular things to be explained can be considered our observation claims, O 1 …O n . 2) Cultural Relativism explains morality better than any available alternative theory of morality. Thus, 3) Cultural Relativism is likely to be true. Rachels denies Cultural Relativism. He rejects this argument.
