Medical Ethics Darin Harootunian 11/2/11 2 Conduct that doesn’t harm others might be “foolish, perverse, or wrong,” and we (morally) may try to persuade or advice a per son not to engage in the conduct, but we (morally) may not coerce the individual to abandon the conduct. Where the conduct is not harmful to others, persuasion, not coercion, is the only morally permissible response. Exercise: A restriction on a person’s freedom is morally permissible only if the re striction prevents harm to others. Translate this only if claim into a conditional sentence. Identify the necessary and sufficient conditions. 2. According to Mill’s Harm Principle, restrictions on a person’s liberty are not justified on either paternalistic grounds or moralistic grounds. Consider restrictions of these kinds: A restriction of person A’s liberty is a paternalistic restriction if and only if the restriction of A’s liberty is made for A’s own benefit.
