Media and Globalization: Media is a tool for Globalization in the world What Is Globalization? The concept of globalization is one of the most debated issues since the collapse of communism. Globalization is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations. It is a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by media and information technology. This process has effects on the environment, culture, political systems, economic development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being in societies around the world. Technological advancement and Globalization: The rapid acceleration of globalization has for long been associated with technological advancement and the international market. Technological advancement has not only shattered social boundaries of the world, it has brought tremendous transformation in all fields of life. Media and Globalization: The assumed functions of media in the backdrop of economic, cultural, technological and new media spheres developed in the recent decades. The influence of media on social change is considered to be of paramount importance. In sociological and cultural context, satellite television, the Internet, computers, mobile phones are often thought to be among the primary forces behind current restructuring of social, economic and cultural geography. Idea of Global Village (Marshall Mcluham): Marshall Mcluham, a Canadian theorist propagated the idea of Global Village in 1960.To him the world has shrunk to a village due to advancement in the fields of science and technology . Peoples of the world now live in close proximity. They share their joys and sorrows with one another. They benefit from the inventions and discoveries made by other people. Media is the Source for people to get Awareness: It is the media that creates the experience of global shared time , especially by informing people around the world about “events” that they can share.
Communications give people a chance to contact other people in distant locations whatever the time. Globalization Promotes Competition: Media has its role in it Globalization of any country is reflection of that country. As Globalization produce winners and losers. A casual look at the world reveals that there is competition everywhere. The rush in every area of life divides the world into winners and losers. At present media is the only source which is easily accessible by all walks of people through various electronic appliances i.e. TV, Radio, Internet, News Papers and now mobile phones also used by people to aware of events every time. Globalization of Media shapes the way people understand their social identities: Globalizing TV shows and films may influence people, shaping the way they understand their social identities, their cultural communities, and wider world in which they live .
