11 L2 Polynomials in One Variable; Factoring An expression of the form k k ax , where 0 k is integer, k a is a constant, and x is a variable, is called a monomial . The constant k a is called the coefficient and k is the degree of the monomial if 0 k a . A sum of monomials having different degrees forms a polynomial. The monomials in the polynomial are called terms. A polynomial with two terms is called a binomial and with three terms – a trinomial . Polynomial in One Variable in Standard Form : 1 11 0 ... nn a x ax a + ++ + , where 0 , ,..., , aa a a are real numbers and 0 n is an integer. If 0 n a , then n degree , n a leading coefficient , n n leading term .
