The force constant of a C-C bond is approximately 12 N/cm, the bond length is approximately 0.15 nm, and the atomic radius of C is approximately 0.077 nm. a) What would be the expected elastic modulus of a single strand of a [C-C] n (polyethylene) molecule if stressed uni-axially along its chain length assuming the bonds are all aligned? b) The approximate elastic modulus of low density polyethylene is 0.14 GPa. Why is this value much lower than the value calculated above? Fundamentals: Transitions 2. Using data in Table 6.2, determine the maximum tensile load (N) before plastic deformation that can be applied to a 10 cm thick beam of carbon steel, plate aluminum, and monel. Extra Credit: Do this problem using a spreadsheet or symbolic math program. 3. Using values of fracture toughness from Table 8.3, report the minimum length of a crack that will cause fracture for a 20 MPa stress applied to mild steel, pressure vessel steel, cast iron, alumina, silicon carbide, polyethylene, and epoxy resin.
