Unformatted text preview: Physics 105 Problem Set 8 Due: Thursday, November 19, 2009, 3 PM to Room 208. Reading: This problem set covers material in K&K Chapter 10. We will cover waves beginning Nov. 16. Read Chapters 20-21 of Knight’s “Physics for scientists and engineers” textbook (the PHY103 book), which are posted in E-reserves on the 105 Blackboard site. Download these chapters using Internet Explorer as the files are not compatible with Firefox. Problem 1. Dig a narrow tunnel straight through the center of the Earth. (a) What is the force F(x) as a function of distance x from the center of the Earth? Recall that in gravity, only the mass interior to your position contributes to the force. (b) Now dig a straight tunnel from arbitrary point A on the surface of the Earth to any other arbitrary point B on the surface, not exactly opposite A – choose a point B which is 1000 km (by land) away from A. What is the component F x ( x ) of the force along the tunnel as a function of position x from the center of the tunnel?from the center of the tunnel?...
