The following problems must be turned in by students enrolled in PHY 105 and those who plan on enrolling in PHY 106 next semester. (For those not in PHY 105, the grade will not be recorded; please turn the set in at the department office.) Reading: K&K Chapters 11,12,13. Knight’s Chapter 36 contains additional explana- tions. The problem session for this set will probably be on Sunday, 1/10/10; see the website. Our final exam is in McDonnell A02, 9-12 AM, Monday, 1/18/10. Problem 1. An observer sees two spaceships flying in opposite directions, each with speed 0 . 99 c relative to the observer. What is the speed of one spaceship as viewed by the other? Give your answer to enough significant figures so that its difference from c is apparent. Problem 2. A laser beam is aimed at angle θ above the horizontal axis (the x-axis) as measured in the rest frame of the laser.
