Observation Essay Poudre Valley Hospital Last week at about 2:00 in the morning, my roommate was rushed to the hospital because she was unable to move or speak. Turns out that she had extremely low potassium, a genetic trait that runs in her family. As I patiently sat in the waiting area of the Poudre Valley Hospital Emergency Room, I began to observe the activity that was going on around me and caught glimpse of the decent sized area itself. As most hospitals generically are, the white tiled floor was accessorized in squares of red and blue. The tan colored walls were smooth to the touch, as were the typical 9 foot tall white ceilings. Numerous blue chairs with silver arm rests, wooden coffee tables, wheelchairs, desks, a vending machine, a metal detector, and a fish tank, furnished the emergency room. The couch on which I sat and observed was black leather and eventually became the perfect place for me to doze off as the five hours of continuous waiting dragged on. I was at Poudre from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. along with two other people, Kevin and Sean, who also live on my floor. The early morning hours were frigid and foggy and although the waiting room was also numbingly cold, it seemed to provide a safe and comfortable environment. This particular emergency room is open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, as they see continuous activity. Poudre Valley Health System based in Fort Collins, Colorado since 1925,
