The creation of Woman How do the creation accounts help us understand ancient views of the female gender? How do different poets adapt the same mythical tradition? Hesiod’s account in the Theogony: -Conclusion to the Pandora story: lines 594-606, 611-7 (pp. 148-9) Semonides account: -“The god made women’s minds separately in the beginning.” (p.387) - The bee: 83-93 (pp.389) -Conclusion: 94-118 (p.390) The Age of Mankind Stories that explain moral decline. Ex: -Hesiod’s works and Days (WD) -Ovid’s Metamorphoses (Met.) But note: what is the decline associated with? And what is its purpose within the work? WD Gold: ruled by Cronos -Characteristics: peace, justice, wealth -Turned to beneficial spirits Silver: the ages that follow are all rules by the Olympians -Characteristics: long childhood, strife, no sacrifice. -Also become spirits Bronze: -Characteristic: fighting and war; weapon Heroes (divine) -Characteristic: fighters at Thebes and Troy -Immortality in the Isles of the Blest Iron: “I wish/ I had nothing to do with this fifth generation”
