Unformatted text preview: THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM ASSIGNED READING: PAGES 1047-1067 IN SALADIN 5TH EDITION SEXUAL REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT The Two Sexes • Gametes are haploid cells produced for sexual reproduction • Male: sperm (spermatozoon) • Female: egg (ovum) • Gonads produce gametes • Male: testis • Female: ovary Sperm determine genetic sex of offspring SEXUAL REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT Prenatal hormones initiate sexual differentiation • Y chromosome contains the SRY gene: testis determining factor • The indifferent gonad becomes a testis and secretes testosterone and Müllerian inhibiting factor (MIF) • Testosterone stimulates development of male reproductive structures • MIF stimulates degeneration of female (Müllerian) ducts Testis SEXUAL REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT Prenatal hormones initiate sexual differentiation • With Testosterone and MIF male structures form • Without, the female pattern develops • Müllerian duct becomes uterine tubes and uterus Development of the External Genitalia Homologous structures: • Genital tubercle : • penis or clitoris • Urogenital folds : • ventral penis or labia minora • Labioscrotal folds : • scrotum or labia majora SEXUAL REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT DESCENT OF THE GONADS Both gonads descend from the thoracic region to the pelvic cavity • The gubernaculum “pulls” the gonads downward • In the male, the testes are pulled through the inguinal canal • The vaginal process is an...
