Ecology Thursday, April 16, 2009 10:15 AM 1. Ecology o The study of how organisms interact with one another and their environment o "Eco' = "Oikos" means home o 50 yrs ago. Ecologists studied relationship between organism and environment. Much simpler than today. o 30-40 yrs ago ecology changed. Many more factors in setting could be analyzed. Computers. o More able to do calculations. Then simulations o Any model had different assumptions 2. Ecology can be studied at the level of: o Ecosystems o Communities o Populations 3. Population Ecology o Population An interacting group of individuals (within a species); members of a species who can AND DO interbreed. Farm. 3 farm ponds. Each pond has aquatic organisms. Cant travel between ponds. 3 populations of minnows. All same species. But cant interbreed from pond to pond. o Popn growth determined by: Biotic Potential How much a population COULD grow with no restrictions In absolutely ideal conditions How many babies could you have? Absolute reproductive possibilities J-shaped curve. Population growth curve. S-shaped Increase for a while. Eventually things level out. Environmental resistance. Between Biotic potential and Population growth Resources Food Nutrients Predators Shelter Disease Ability to find mates Weather Carrying capacity Number individuals environment can support; actual numbers. Not the same all the time.
