Selective breeding of tomatoes o People figured out you can change properties of a group of individuals o Prior to 1800's most thought All species created at once and unchanged (Immutability of Species) Spontaneous generation o Refuting Evidence Fossils If could find fossil that appears to be the remains of living organism but don’t see living organism around anymore. Refutes idea that all were created at once and unchanged As people began to understand geology, how mountains formed etc, processes indicated that there was more time for change to take place than originally thought Older earth Pasteur's work o Lamarck's Evolution Species evolve Groups of organisms do change over time Are adaptive to environment Inheritance of acquired characteristics (use/disuse) If want to have children with fine bodies need to work out a lot and your children will be born likewise His ideas were shown not to be true 15-20 yrs ago scientists confident that what people do not affect offspring Now understood that things that happen to people may be passed on from one generation to next o Darwin - Wallace Ideas People were going around world to look for material that did not exist in Europe Financially viable option. Darwin was thoughtful but didn’t fit any molds that anyone wanted him to Wasn’t going to inherit family wealth or become a physician or priest Had plenty of time to observe and to think on his voyages
