May 12, 2010 Pre-dynastic and Old Kingdom Egypt Upper Egypt is the South side of Egypt, Nile runs South to North Most of Egypt surrounds the Nile Egypt referred to as “black land”, and the world around is considered “red land” Upper and lower Egypt start as separate kingdoms 3300 BC is when cities begin developing, needed irrigation Early dynastic Egypt begins with unification and pharaohs Egyptians look to their leaders as the earthly embodiment of a god Pharaohs are responsible for preventing chaos and keeping order Palette of King Narmer Green schist Heirkonpolis, Egypt 2 feet high Used to ground makeup Contains hieroglyphs 2950-2775 BC Façade of the palace is pictured Namar is larger than other figures His enemy is larger than anyone else on the palate, Important enemy, King of lower Egypt Namar is shown wearing crown of both upper and lower Egypt respectively on each side Horus is shown as a falcon Namar and Horus are both pictured taking over rulers of lower Egypt Namar is shown as very strong with the details on his muscles, shown in most important part of action Bullsheads represent goddess Hathor, 4 are pictured Namar is not actually the one who took over lower Egypt it was his predecessor Subjagtion of the lower Egyptians is evident, this changed later on with unification Procession is pictured on the opposite side Namar and his servants observe beheaded enemies Only the most important parts are shown in twisted perspective, so they are the very visible More important less likely to be realistic Lions with long necks, unification, or gods of the horizon Palette was never used, most likely ceremonial
