May 26, 2011 Rome: High and Late Empire IDs from Friday will not be on the test for Tuesday Forum of Trajan- near the coliseum, people build buildings for the community, this is a public space; done by a Greek architect; like the Greek ones we’ve seen there is a large concentration on the long rectangle of columns; huge compared to other forums; has colonnades and sculptures; lit by a clerestory; this plan is for a public space, not a religious space Basilica Ulpia- takes up most of the space on the forum; gives off an overall sense of monumentality Column of Trajan- spiral of relief circles up the column; has the entire depiction of Trajan’s victory in battle; the relief is 625 feet in length if it were to be stretched out; portrays the management and strategy within the battle; would originally have been painted; more important characters are either enlarged or put into deeper relief Pantheon- has a real dome for one of the first times; really strong, like an arch in every direction; by Hadrian, don’t know what it for; the façade is in the style of Greek architecture; Hadrian likes to show how in touch with the past he was and connected himself visibly to Agrippa; the interior is one single open room, and is covered in all
