II.  Six Approaches A. Psychoanalytic (Freud) -sexual development is a driving force -unconscious mind drives behavior -act for irrational reasons B. Behavioral (Watson, Skinner) -goal: to discover the rules of association and how combinations of simple  associations lead to complex behavior -it’s not scientific to study things that can’t be measured -Pavlov, Thorndike -believed it was impossible to study the mind objectively, against  introspection, in favor of  S-R  [stimulus- response approach] - insisted upon  empirical, objective  science of behavior, no need for theories  of mind or personal freedom

C. Gestalt (Kohler, Wertheimer) -the whole experience [ perception ] is more than the sum of the parts  -ex: light experiments-brain adds to the experience -many experience cannot be broken down  D. Humanistic (Maslow, Rogers) -every person is motivated to reach their full potential -Maslow’s hierarchy of needs- self actualization -focuses on the role of free choice and our ability to make conscious rational  choices -maintained human behavior is not a subject to be investigated scientifically - does not  view humans as being controlled by environment or unconscious E. Cognitive  (thinking, memory, language, problem solving, creativity) -more interested in  internal  mental processes as opposed to observable  stimulus events -study human thinking
