Employment law (sexual harassment), contract law (binding deal), intellectual property law (market a similar product), environmental law (dispose toxic chemicals), administrative law, securities law (intelligent investment) II. Importance a. Iroquois a.i. Solved the problem of federalism : how to have two levels of government, each with specified powers a.ii. Influenced the Constitution III. Origins of Our Law a. English Roots a.i. Divided into shires where a shire reeve collected taxes and did what he could to keep peace; a shire court met and lower courts met frequently a.ii. Contemporary Law: English came up with the idea of collective responsibility (tithing); same idea as a partnership, etc. a.iii. Contemporary Law: used a type of jury system a.iv. Tenants in demesne: King granted landed to favorite nobleman and then granted them to these men who actually occupied a particular estate; owed fidelity to his lord (landlord) and this mad e land the most valuable commodity which is true today as well a.v. De Bracton a.v.1. Established precedent : the obligation to decide current cases based on previous rulings; ensures predictability a.v.2. Common law: the accumulation of precedent bases on case
