MIS Chapter 6 + Appendix (pages 186-205 & 216-230) – You should understand the following topics: Benefits and drawbacks of both types of network architecture LAN- local area network; connects computers that reside in a single geographic location on the premises of the company- important concept: single location WAN- wide area network; connects computers at different geographic locations; computers at two separated companies must use WAN Role of major telecommunications hardware including NIC, switch, hub, router, unshielded twisted pair cable, optical fiber cables NIC: network interface card; connects the device’s circuitry to the cable Switch: special-purpose computer that receives and transmits messages on the LAN; a company can run cables wherever needed to connect computers; gets message from the hub and looks at the address; does not send out unnecessary messages; cuts network traffic; not as quick as a hub
