Carbon’s electron configuration gives it covalent compatibility with many different elements, enabling formation of molecules that are large, complex, and diverse, which creates diversity of organisms. Proteins, DNA, carbohydrates, and others composed of carbon atoms bonded to one another and to other elements’ atoms. 2. Describe how carbon skeletons may vary, and explain how this variation contributes to the diversity and complexity of organic molecules. Carbon chains form skeletons of most organic molecules. Skeletons can vary in length, may be straight, branched, or some having double bonds, varying in number and location. Variation in carbon skeletons is source of molecular complexity and diversity that characterize living matter. 3.
