AP Biology Period – 4 #22 Liem Nguyen 11/1/09 Homework #13 (091106): Chapter 13 (due Friday 091106) Total points: 20 for Attempt on all questions ONE Concept Map: 10 points Objectives The Basis of Heredity 1. Explain in general terms how traits are transmitted from parents to offspring. -heredity (inheritance): transmission of traits from one generation to the next -variation: offspring differ in appearance from parents and siblings Traits are transmitted from parents to offspring in a process called inheritance, or heredity. There is also variation, where offspring differ in appearance from parent to offspring. 2. Distinguish between asexual and sexual reproduction. -asexual reproduction (1): single individual is the sole parent and passes copies of all its genes to its offspring -sexual reproduction (2): two parents give rise to offspring that have unique combinations of genes inherited from the two parents In asexual reproduction, a single individual is the parent and it passes copies of all its genes to its offspring. In sexual reproduction, two parents produce offspring that have the parent’s combination of genes. The Role of Meiosis in Sexual Life Cycles 3. Distinguish between the following pairs of terms: a. somatic cell and gamete b. autosome and sex chromosome -somatic cells: any cell other than a gamete (have 46 chromosomes) -gametes: haploid cells (egg/sperm) unite during sexual reproduction to form diploid zygote -sex chromosome (X, Y): determines sex of individual -autosomes: other chromosomes Somatic cells are any cells in humans that have 46 chromosomes, other than gametes. Gametes are haploid cells, like egg or sperm. Gametes unite during sexual reproduction to produce a diploid zygote. Sex chromosome is one chromosome pair that determines the sex of an individual.
