Review Sheet and Study Guide– Exam 3 – CH302 – Quy Textbook Chapters for Exam 3: Chapter 7, sections 8 – 11, Chapter 8 (all) Background Material: Most of the topics of Exam 3 simply build on material from Exam 2: Acids, bases, salts and solution equilibria. Brush up on that material. Know all the definitions of pH, pOH, pK, etc. Know your strong acids and bases. Know that an electrolyte is a material that dissolves in water to give a solution that conducts electricity. Acids, bases, and salts are all electrolytes, although pure water is not. Chapter 7 Acids and Bases Know how to write a mass action expression for a given reaction. At equilibrium it will be equal to the equilibrium constant for the reaction. The equilibrium constant is always designated K a for acids, K b for bases, and K w for water. K w = K a x K b Given a salt, recognize its type and predict whether pH of solution will be acidic, basic or neutral. Salts of strong acids and bases give neutral solutions; their ions will not act as acids or bases. The salt of a weak acid produces a basic solution because the anion is the conjugate base. The salt of a weak base produces an acid solution because the cation is the conjugate acid. A salt that has an acidic cation and a basic anion will have pH determined by the larger equilibrium constant. A highly charged cation can also hydrate and give rise to acidic conditions. See Table 7.6 for a complete rundown of this key point. Be able to calculate the concentration of ions in solution and particularly [H+], [OH-] (pH and pOH) for the following solutions: Mixture of weak acids Very dilute weak and strong acid in
